No Fleas on Board: Fighting Fleas on Your Pet

With spring comes warmer weather and more time enjoying the outdoors. It also brings flea season, when pet families everywhere fight to keep these pests from invading their homes.

Thankfully, a variety of products can help us win the fight against fleas. Here are a few tips to keep fleas and ticks off your pets:

Since the life cycle of a flea can last 2 weeks or more, the flea population can resurge in your home. Clean carpeting, floors and pet bedding often.
Fleas can stay cocooned in the "pupae" stage for weeks and will only emerge when they sense a warm-blooded heat source nearby. This is why you might see more fleas after you return from vacation or move into a new home.
Break the flea and tick life cycle with treatments you can use on your pet or "spot-on" treatments.
Spot-on treatments kill fleas in your pet's and can also keep new eggs from hatching. Top brands we carry include Frontline, Advantage, and Adams. Treatments that attack eggs include Adams Plus, Frontline Plus, Advantage II, Advantix II, and Fiproguard Plus.
Be consistent with your pet's spot-on treatment. We recommend re-applying it every month.

Bathing your pet with a flea shampoo can reduce the effect of a spot-on treatment. Instead, use shampoos like Bioguard, Nature's Chemistry Triple or Tropiclean (except the Neem formula).
Don't use dog flea treatments on cats or vice versa! This could be harmful to your pet.
For rabbits, ferrets or other small animals, talk to your veterinarian before choosing a flea treatment.
With the right tools and a consistent strategy, you'll be armed to win the war against fleas and ticks! Start with dog flea control or cat flea control products from Pet Supermarket.

Choosing the Right Food for Your Cat

When your cat asks for food, what do you feed her? Choosing the right cat food is one of the most important decisions for your cat's health. But with so many brands available, it can be hard to choose. Learn how to read cat food labels and choose ingredients for a quality cat food that will fulfill your pet's needs.
What does your cat need for good health?

These are the basic essentials that should be a part of your cat's diet:
Protein from red meat, fish or chicken
Taurine (an amino acid vital to your cat's health)
Vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates and fatty acids
Water
Tips for reading cat food labels:
The first few ingredients should include a named protein (beef, chicken, etc.), rather than a general protein ("meat").
Buy foods with high-quality proteins such as chicken, beef, lamb, salmon, etc., which are more easily digested than by-products.
Avoid food with meat/bone meal, by-products and ingredients with "digest" or "meal."
Notice the name of the product. If an ingredient is mentioned in the name, it must meet minimum requirements per FDA rules.
If the name mentions a meat or fish, that item should make up 95% of the formula (not counting water). "Tuna Cat Food" should have 95% tuna, for example.
A food with "dinner" in the name (i.e. "Chicken Dinner for Cats") must have 25% of that ingredient.
Keep in mind that low-quality food will often have too many carbohydrates or grain filler, which means your cat will need to eat more food to get the nutrients she needs. A diet with low-quality food may also lead to allergies or medical issues.

The benefits of premium cat food

Just like human organic food is more nutritious than processed food, premium pet foods are more densely packed with nutrients. Their high-quality proteins are also more digestible and their amino acids lead to shinier coats. Overall, they have more nutritional value per ounce, so your cat will get more nutrients in less food.

Consider buying a premium cat food to support your pet's health and quality of life.

Look Ma, No Odor! Grooming Your Ferret

With a name derived from the word "thief" in Latin, ferrets often act like playful thieves who love hiding things. They're known for being playful, curious and smart.
They're also known for having a musky odor, although most ferrets sold in the U.S. are now descented at a young age. They may still have an odor, but if you learn how to groom and care for your ferret, it shouldn't be an issue. Follow these tips for grooming and odor control to enjoy playtime with your ferret.
Bathing your ferret too often will increase the odor as his skin will produce more oil. A bath every 4 to 6 weeks is fine, unless he gets into something dirty.
If you do give him a bath, use a shampoo made for ferrets or kittens or a no-tears baby shampoo. (Don't use dishwashing soap. Also, flea shampoo for dogs or cats can be poisonous to ferrets.)
Change your ferret's litter every day and clean the litter box once a week.
Changing or washing the bedding once a week can do more to curb odor than bathing the ferret.
Clean his ears with some ear cleaning solution and check for ear mites, which can create wax with a strong odor. This can be treated by your vet.
Trim his nails every two weeks, being careful not to cut into the vein or "quick." Use ferret or cat clippers and have styptic powder handy.
Dental issues for ferrets are similar to those of dogs and cats. Have his teeth and gums checked by a vet and try to brush his teeth weekly.
What kind of food is he eating? Food with fish ingredients may cause more odor.
It may take a little time for your ferret to get used to a grooming routine, but consistency and careful handling can go a long way. Visit your local Pet Supermarket for more information about ferret care or ferret supplies.
